IEI National Advisory Board Celebrates 20th Anniversary
On Thursday, Oct. 24, past and present members of the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) National Advisory Board, along with IEI directors, partners and guests, celebrated two decades of collaborative efforts to address the emerging issues impacting North Carolina.
NC State University Chancellor Woodson opened the special evening by welcoming attendees and sharing insight into the Institute’s founding as a think tank by Governor Jim Hunt, aimed at uniting thought leaders from diverse sectors, regions and perspectives.
“While 20 years may sound like a long time, many of you have been involved in this work long before there was an Institute or a National Advisory Board,” said Woodson during his remarks.
IEI Director Sarah Hall expressed gratitude for the support received over the years and highlighted IEI’s evolution, including the successful transition of forums to virtual formats during the pandemic and the development of a digital and physical civic engagement exhibit to broaden IEI’s reach.
“A lot has changed,“ said Hall. “But I want to reassure you that one thing will never waver—our belief that when people work together with a shared will and common vision, progress is smarter, more comprehensive and enduring.”
IEI National Board Chair Maurice Smith also offered remarks, along with Board Member Hope Williams, who shared a few words from Governor Hunt.
“It’s quite a legacy,” Woodson remarked, reflecting on IEI’s achievements while expressing excitement for the Institute’s future plans over the next 20 years.
Efforts to continue IEI’s legacy are on the horizon, with preparations for the 2025 Emerging Issues Forum: Future Forward Energy, set for Feb. 19. This forum will kick off a three-part series focused on building North Carolina’s infrastructure in response to population growth.
