The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at NC State University is excited to welcome Mia Cooper as its new digital communications specialist. In this role, she will support the Communications and Marketing team in developing and implementing digital communication and content marketing strategies to amplify IEI’s story and strengthen its brand across various platforms, including the website, newsletters and social media.

Get to know Mia in this brief Q&A:

Q: Tell us a bit about your background and how you came to IEI.

A: From a young age, I’ve always enjoyed storytelling and helping others see the beauty in their own narratives. This passion is what inspired me to major in mass communications at NC Central University. After graduating, I interned at Duke University’s School of Medicine and then became a research communications and engagement specialist at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, where I had the opportunity to highlight the stories of healthcare professionals, community groups, patients and their families. After learning more about this position, IEI’s mission to tackle diverse issues in North Carolina really resonated with me. I’m looking forward to working in a role that goes beyond public health, addressing a range of factors like education, digital inclusion, financial resiliency, among many others, that impact our communities.

Q: What interests you most about working at IEI? Is there a particular program or area of work you’re most excited about?

A: I was also drawn to IEI’s emphasis on collaboration, community engagement, and addressing the issues that matter most to the people of NC. I believe in order to understand the issues and identify effective solutions, you first have to be willing to listen to and understand the people. I’m particularly excited about the opportunity to learn from and share IEI’s impactful and thought-provoking stories that showcase the incredible work being done by the people of NC to create a brighter future for all.

Q: What do you believe is the biggest emerging issue facing our state?

A: I think one of the biggest issues facing North Carolina is affordable housing and homelessness. While I admire the cultural diversity, economic development, and robust labor force that population increases have brought to NC communities, it has also intensified the demand for housing. Although housing prices in North Carolina have not yet reached the extremes seen in places like New York and California, recent trends show a steady annual rise in housing prices and rent. Factors such as inflation and gentrification further exacerbate this issue. Striking a balance between the two — population growth and affordable housing options — will ultimately strengthen our state as a whole.

Q: What kinds of things do you like to do for fun?

A: I enjoy writing, photography, music, relaxing at the beach, film (with a favor for historical dramas), and spending time with family and friends.
