The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at North Carolina State University invites applications for the Governor and Mrs. James B. Hunt Internship Program. This is a program for NC State undergraduates who are interested in a career in public service and/or public policy. There is one position available for the 23-24 academic year.

Who We Are

Established in 2002, IEI is a non-partisan public policy organization that exists to enhance North Carolina’s long-term prosperity. We identify and build awareness of policy issues across sectors, regions, and perspectives. We find important issues that are not being discussed, are not moving forward in a timely way, or could benefit from a bigger platform. We develop consensus for action and catalyze progress in moving change forward. Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. (1977-1985, 1993-2001) served as the founding chair of IEI’s National Advisory Board until 2014.

Position Description

As part of the Hunt internship, IEI seeks a junior or senior undergraduate student with an interest in a career in public service and/or public policy. This person will likely undertake a variety of activities, including research, data analysis (generally using census data sets), writing memos, data collection, staffing meetings and various administrative tasks related to IEI’s policy activities. The Hunt Intern will work closely with a member of IEI’s policy and program team. Over the course of the year, IEI will arrange a series of meetings with professionals with deep experience in public policy.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must. A high comfort level with Google Drive, specifically documents, spreadsheets and slides is important, as is attention to detail. This position is part time (10 hours per week) at $15/hour beginning the week of August 21, 2023 and lasting through the Spring 2024 semester. The position is located at IEI’s offices in the James B. Hunt, Jr. Library and an ability to travel regularly to Centennial Campus is a must.
