North Carolina’s population is projected to reach 14 million by 2050, an increase of 33%. According to the state’s largest energy provider, electricity demand in North Carolina is growing at the fastest rate seen in 30 years, with demand estimates for 2030 now eight times higher than the expectations set in 2022’s North Carolina Carbon Plan.
The 2025 Emerging Issues Forum, “Future Forward Energy,” will focus on the demands being placed on our state’s energy infrastructure. As part of the 2025-2027 Future Forward Infrastructure series, this forum will bring together industry experts and community leaders to examine policies and practices to meet our energy challenges and take advantage of economic opportunities. Attention will be given to our workforce needs and energy affordability. Recommendations for state and local leaders will emerge from this event.
About the Emerging Issues Forum
The Institute for Emerging Issues serves as a nonpartisan connector, bringing North Carolinians together to find solutions to the state’s emerging and most critical policy issues.
Since 1986, the Emerging Issues Forum has attracted leaders in business, education and public policy to discuss issues with profound implications for North Carolina’s future prosperity. It has helped catalyze policy reforms, public investments and other proactive responses required to build an enduring capacity for progress in North Carolina.
