kidonomics:
The Economics of Early Childhood Investment

Our premise for this work is simple: it’s imperative that we are doing everything we can to prepare our children to face the challenges of tomorrow’s labor market. And that begins with early childhood development.

Crib to Career Workshops

This summer, IEI is traveling across the state to provide hands-on assistance and valuable data insights and resources. We are working with local leaders in rural and lower-resourced communities to help increase their awareness and knowledge of early childhood investment impacts, and to help communities take the next action step toward improving key indicators found to be critical to early childhood success.

Agenda:

Summer workshop convenings will feature:

  • The Connection Between Economic/Workforce Development and Early Childhood
  • Quantifying the Return: What’s the investment Potential for Your Community?
  • Connecting the Dots: Building a Workforce Pipeline that Begins in Early Childhood
  • Taking the Next Steps: A Visioning and Needs Assessment for Your Community

At the conclusion of these summer sessions, local leaders will emerge with a greater understanding of their community’s early childhood systems, its strengths, and how it fits into the larger picture of talent production and economic development. Our ultimate goal is to create “demonstration sites” where we direct the technical expertise of leaders in early childhood from across the nation into a few select communities in North Carolina.

To that end, all of this energy will be directed toward our February 2018 Emerging Issues Forum in Raleigh. There, we will reconvene to continue the conversation around the “how to” of kidonomics. National political and industry expert leaders will descend on Raleigh for the largest and most impactful early childhood convening in the states’ history. Those communities interested in applying to become one of the five early childhood demonstration sites will have an opportunity to hone their applications through hands-on workshops from sector experts.

Is your community interested in serving as a regional host site for one of our early childhood workshop convenings? For more information, please contact Policy Manager Donnie Charleston at 919.515.4529, or at dlcharle@ncsu.edu.

Be sure to SAVE THE DATE to continue the conversation at the next Emerging Issues Forum, kidonomics, February 5-6, 2018!
